S2600CWTS LSI Raid Controller Questions

$

Hi folks:

I'm suddenly having problems with VMWare ESXi 6 on a S2600CWTS motherboard.  All was well for the first month or so after I had it running, but in the last two weeks I'm seeing errors in the VMWare event log saying that it lost access to the datastore which is on a RAID 5 array connected to the LSI onboard controller.  A couple of times the RAID controller had to rebuild one of the raid drives, but each time it was a different drive, which leads me to believe that the problem isn't a failing drive, but is rather an issue with the controller, or a software/driver issue with ESXi 6.  Also one time the controller took two drives offline, causing ESXi to crash.  The drives are Samsung 1tb SSD 850 Pro (MZ-7KE1T0BW).  After the rebuild, or bringing the drives back online through the RAID controller BIOS, everything worked fine and no data was lost, furthering my thought that the drives aren't the problem.  I've also been able to copy VMs off the system without problems and without causing timeout errors, so it doesn't appear that specific data areas on the drives are an issue.

I'm not quite sure how to proceed at this point.  I've taken some of the more critical VMs off the server and put them back on the old one until I can get this figured out.  For now though can anyone direct me to where I can get the BIOS manual for the LSI controller, as I haven't tried to do an integrity check yet, and I don't want to fool with that until I have the manual in front of me and know what I'm doing.  I was able to bring the drives back online, and one time force a rebuild on a drive the controller had marked "Failed" without the manual, but it took me a while to figure out how to do it.  I haven't had any luck finding that BIOS manual on the Intel or LSI website.

Also, does anyone know if there is some software that I can add to ESXi 6 that would allow me to access the RAID controller's functions without having to bring ESXi down and do it from the BIOS screen?  Dell has some software vib's that you can install into ESXi that allows you access their RAID controller and do things like run an integrity check and do a hot swap without taking down the server.  I see the settings in the RAID controller BIOS for things like limiting the amount of resources consumed during an integrity check, which leads  to believe that their must be a way to do it without having the system down.

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

SRW

It says system degraded and all the hard disk lights on the front are red. How can I locate which disk failed. I have a little bit unix experience. I mainly use windows. Since it is degraded, I should be able to recover the files or copy of them if I can bring the system back.

rmm4 mount images without browser?

I was wondering if it is possible to mount images without use jloader.

I use mostly a setup that has no X running; which makes impossible for me to run the web interface and load the remote KVM.

I was looking at the docs and I can't see any way to actually do what the jviewer option "Device--> Redirect Floppy/USB Key image" does.

If JViewer does that, I assume that there is an equivalent to tell RMM4 to do the same operation via console?

I tried to ssh on the address where the web interface run, logging into smash, but even there I don't see a way to mount images, so I can boot from it.

Could you please give some guidance about how to accomplish the same that the Jviewer applet does, when remotely redirect media? Thanks

vPro AMT KVM: Black screen/no screen updates via VNC

Hello,

I'm setting up a Supermicro server with an X10SAE board and I have issues getting AMT KVM to work.

I set everything in the AMT ME bootup interface and also configured via KVM Console (KVMControlApplication.exe) to "KVM Status: Enabled - all ports". Here, I was not sure which "Default visibile monitor" to choose, so I tried each of them. Result was always the same:

With any VNC viewer, I can connect to the server. I can authenticate and successfully log in. After that, the attached screen on the server shows a red/yellow flashing border and a connection icon in the right upper corner. When I move the mouse or press a keyboard key in the VNC client, I can see these actions being performed on the server screen.

BUT: The problem is, that the VNC client stays clear. Depending on the VNC client I use, the window stays always black or red. This is independent of the state the server is in, i.e. it's the same if the server is in POST/BIOS/booting up, or the operating system has fully booted. Nevertheless, the client gets notified by the changes of the screen resolution, so the VNC window changes size when the server changes from POST to booting up and then again when reaching the GUI.

Depending on the VNC server I use, the VNC client terminates after a short time (less than a minute) without comments, or tries to reestablish the connection. Interesting enough, Real VNC shows the error message

0x8086210E: Internal KVM failure

which is, according to the "Intel AMT implementation and Reference Guide" an "Internal failure". Not very helpful.

I'm stuck here. Help would be appreciated.

JBOD2312S2SP Power Supply Issue?

I have a JBOD2312S2SP Intel Raid Enclosure (Intel® Storage Systems JBOD Family) at my house and woke up to screaming fan noises.  Warning light was blinking and the console showed this:

Note I only have one power supply so if the cable was removed not sure how it was still running.  Right after that warning received the below messages copied from the logs so the top one is the latest:

Last message until 6 minutes later I powered up a computer to remove in and shutdown the system.  Pulled the power plug, put it back in, powered everything up, and it's running right now without issue.  Thoughts?

Edit:  As a side note, the Intel Raid Web Console shows this drive cage with 2 power supplies.  Always did.  I only have one.  So not sure if that's just how many it can hold or if it's just not intelligent enough to detect the number of drives.

Thanks.

Intel Sapello S5000VSA - no SATA RAID option in BIOS available

$

Hi Community,

I am on the Intel S5000VSA Mainboard which comes with 5 SATA ports and according to the manual with SATA-RAID:

Motherboard Properties:
Motherboard ID 63-0100-000001-00101111-040209-Chipset$0AAAA000_BIOS DATE: 04/02/09 11:22:06 VER: 08.00.10

Motherboard Name

Board Part Number

Intel Sapello S5000VSA

D29137-716

However, there's no RAID option in the BIOS available. I updated BIOS to the latest version, checked several times all settings according to the manual and this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVwKsqSZP0Y but there's really nothing...

Any idea to enable SATA RAID with the "magic trick" ?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Johannes

S1200V3RPL 3.02.0002 bios does not allow VT-x properly (Hyper-V won't install)

Built new server with S1200V3RPL board and Xeon E3-1220. Updated to latest bios 6/15,3.02.0002 and installed Server 2012 R2. Tried to install Hyper-V but it says that virtualization is not enabled in bios. Checked settings, turned off/on, power down/up, clear cmos, tried another CPU, pulled hair, etc. Nothing worked. Flashed bios back to previous version from 5/21/2015 3.01.0002, everything is fine. Looks like a bug in latest bios.  We are working on 3.01.0002 bios with no issues but others may run into this without an update. Thanks.

s2600co - BIOS Recovery not working

$

Good afternoon!

I have a problem with starting the server motherboard s2600сo. Using your "Troubleshooting Server Boot Issues" was the answer:

"Some older Intel® Server Boards are not compatible with the Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 V2. See the processor compatibility page listings, select your server board, and confirm that your board is compatible.

Some Intel Server Boards might require a BIOS upgrade before installing an Intel® Xeon® Processor E5 V2. "

I check that my processor Intel Xenon e5-2640v2, included in the list of compatible motherboard s2600so. (link below)

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s2600co/sb/CS-033242.htm?wapkw=e5-2643

Next (on the advice of the above Troubleshooting), I decided to update the BIOS. Found firmware updates here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=Intel+Server+Board+s2600со

Of course I am using the latest firmware. But it did not work . Following the instructions I could not update the BIOS.

What am i doing wrong? Maybe I should someone help?

RAID 5 Recovery

Hi Guys. Big Crisis here.

I have an Intel RAID Controller, 8 Chanel with 8x 2TB Drives configured on RAID 5. I made a mistake of unplugging one of the drives and then booting up my machine. It then said RAID Configuration Degraded. By the looks of it, I had one failed drive already on the configuration before unplugging this other one in error. I then managed to bring both drives back online and the Utility showed Optimal Status. Now when I reboot, Windows wants to initialise this entire VD. It seems to see it as a new drive. Its 12.7TB of drive space and its filled to capacity. I cant lose all that data. Is there a way to fix this? I have not initialised it yet.

I'm using Windows 8.1 64bit on an AMD APU System. Controller model is SRCSATAWB. I've also installed latest drivers and firmware. As we speak now, the drive is running a Backgroung Initialisation Process.

Thank You

1-wire temperature sensor

Hello, I'm working with Intel Server Board S1200RPM. I want to add a temperature sensor (Dallas DS18S20) to the front panel SSI connector. It appears in the specs (in the 24-pin EEB SSI connector pin-out): "1-wire temperature sensor", so I think it must be compatible. The sensor is listed in the SDR as "Front Panel Temperature" but I don't get any reading. Is there some other thing that I should take into account?

Thanks in advance.

RAID Controller Errors

Hi Guys

Please see attachment of the errors I keep getting from the Web Utility.

If someone can please tell me what they mean and how I can solve them. The card is sitting with 8x 4TB drives. 4 are Western Digital and the other 4 Seagate. Running this on a desktop on Windows 8.1. The controller has the latest firmware and latest drivers installed. Configuration is RAID 5, with no hot spare allocated.

Thank you

S5000PSL No video output - I'm new to server boards...

I ordered:

A new S5000PSL SASR specifically the E11025-302 revision for Xeon 5400 support

Two Xeon L5410 SLBBS 2.33GHz processors.

Four sticks of 2GB 667 DDR2 MT36HTF51272FY-667E1D4

I Have connected both processors, PSU, VGA monitor and inserted all four sticks of ram into the blue slots as directed by the guide. I don’t have all the parts for the server build yet but wanted to check it booted, update the bios and test the ram.

It currently seems to be boot looping with no output on the monitor, none of the Ram or CPU LEDs are lit to indicate a fault and I have tried one stick of ram just not tried one CPU yet. The LEDs on the back of the board light up like Christmas lights, I assume working through the boot process. System Status LED is solid green so that’s a good thing and there is no beeping so it sounds like its rebooting due to lack of boot drive?

I cannot figure out why I don't get video output?

I notice that this CPU is not supported until after a certain bios update but I cannot find anywhere if the board was supposed to ship with this bios already?

If not, can I update the bios using an emergency/recovery method from USB or perhaps via network cable? I don’t have a Remote Management Module but the Manual mentions a Baseboard Management Controller so I wonder if I can use this?

Thanks in advance

Using SEL viewer on RHEL/SL6

How do I get the SELviewer for S5520sc to run on a RHEL6-type Linux distribution? We have a fresh install of Scientific Linux 6 on an S5520sc board.  The most recent instructions and downloads that I can find for Intel's SEL viewer for this model are here: Intel® Server Boards — How to Extract and Read the Server Event Log (SEL).  At launch,  I'm getting the following error: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: bad ELF interpreter (it seems that cli requires libraries for xi686, which are incompatible with my system).  Is there any update, or an alternative viewer? Many thanks.Intel® Server Boards — How to Extract and Read the Server Event Log (SEL)Intel® Server Boards — How to Extract and Read the Server Event Log (SEL)

Motherboard Supermicro X9SRi-3F. SCU chip C602.

Is it possible to update the firmware SCU?

Maybe my question is not entirely accurate. But BIOS update does not resolve the problem of unstable operation of the controller SCU.

Slow I/O performance on Intel RS2BL080 after firmware upgrade

$

Relevant hardware: RS2BL080 controller with 8 drive RAID 6 array.

We have a server running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and I do my best to keep it current with security updates and such. Recently, after we upgraded the kernel the server became very unstable, usually experiencing a kernel panic every 2 to 6 hours. It occurred to me that perhaps the kernel driver and the RAID card's firmware had drifted too far apart, so a couple of weeks ago we upgraded the firmware in several steps to get to current. The stability issues have disappeared, but we're experiencing very high system loads now.

Coincidentally, we had to replace the RAID battery unit, which I did a couple of days ago because the old battery wouldn't accept enough of a charge. After the controller did a couple of automatic learn cycles, it put the cache in WriteBack mode. A basic disk performance test gives us ~ 375 MB/s write speed on a 1 GB file.

System loads used to be between 3 and 7 during peak times, now we're seeing loads exceeding 50 on a 1 minute basis, and around 30 on a 15 minute average.

Is there some setting we missed? The only thing I can think of is that the person that upgraded the RAID card's firmware didn't set the card to factory defaults as in the instructions. Could this be it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

"X1 PG" Diagnostic LED?

I've searched the web but cannot find what a "X1 PG" diagnostic LED would mean on a 2009/2010 LGA1366 Server Board.  I've been able to determine what "PLT_RST" means and have found reference materials for it, but don't have a clue what "X1 PG" could mean.  I'm thinking that "PG" portion means "Power Good" -- but do not know.

Incidently, this indicator LED burns green when the computer is running on a Macintosh Pro 2010 (12-core, two Xeon X5650s).  PLEASE, even guidance to documentation that may speak on this would help.
