S3420GPLC-based system does not recognize size of Seagate ST4000NM0033 4 TB disk correctly

Hi,

today I got my brand new ST4000NM0033 Constellation ES.3 4TB drive.

I plugged it into my server (Intel S3420GPLC motherboard, onboard SATA controller) and - bad surprise - I saw a size of only 1801 GB (BIOS level) and 1678 GB (Windows Server 2008 R2 level).

Switching between MBR and GPT modes in Windows did not make any differences.

Intel claims it should support drives larger than 2 TB (see http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-032920.htm).

So I plugged it into my IcyBox and hooked it up to my PC (Win 7 x64) by means of USB 2.0. Same story - only 1678 GB are recognized.

Then, I used the same IcyBox and connected it to the same PC by means of e-SATA. And what a surprise - it was properly recognized at 3726 GB, and I created and formated a partition of this size.

Finally, I plugged it back into my S3420GPLC Server. The ServerManager GUI tool now Claims 3726 GB, but diskpart stays at 1678 GB.

Now the 300€ question (that's about what I paid for the disk):

how do I get my server to recognize the full capacity consistently? How much data can I actually put on it?

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks a lot,

Tom

[REGRESSION] Serious SAS slowdown after BIOS upgrade

Hi,

We have a server and a storage system, as follows:

We've managed to get out some 2800MBps from this setup but had serious issues with thermal management, it easily went over 100 Celsius degrees under heavy load, so I decided to upgrade the BIOS (i.e. BIOS, ME, FRU/SDR, BMC, everything) to the latest release. During the FRU/SDR upgrade it asked me several questions regarding if I want to enter a serial number and stuff, I answered all of those with no (if that matters in any way).

The good news is that since the upgrade thermal management seems to have been sorted out, now it greatly increases fan speed when it goes above 90C and cools down to 70-80ish, then the fans slow down and it starts over.

The bad news is that now I can't get out more than about 2100MBps from the storage. Many BIOS settings have been modified after the upgrade, so a related setting (maybe something with PCI-E) might be the cause. I'm yet to find it.

Anyway, we've performed several benchmarks before the upgrade, too. It produced similar speeds when I plugged in the 2 SAS cables into different converter boards in the JBOD (to test HA). So it may be that for some reason the RAID controller only speaks on one cable now. I have no idea how that could happen after a server mobo BIOS upgrade, but I can't rule it out either.

The other possible cause is, again, some bad PCI-E setting.

In any case, I'll try it out with the other JBOD (fortunately we have 2), with different cables, and in a different PCI-E slot.

A last resort option is a BIOS reset, but I'd prefer not to do that.

The system has 4x8 cores, so with HT it's 64 cores in total (0% typical CPU load, even during benchmarks) and 384GB RAM, so these aren't quite likely to be bottlenecks Image may be NSFW.

Do you have any ideas what else may went wrong?

S5000VSA Need Help Restoring RAID Array after Configuration Cleared

I need assistance in trying to reconnect/recreate my RAID arrays on an Exchange Server. I think what I need most is to find out from the existing HDDs (undamaged) what the size and stripe configurations are so that I can exactly recreate the arrays without Initializing the arrays, and hope that I can then boot the machine.

S5000VSA / S5000VSASATA. Does contain the RAID-5 key/dongle, but RAID-5 not in use, only using RAID-1 feature.

The original arrays were built circa 2008. Port 0 has Disk "A" -- Port 1 has a DVD -- Port 2 has Disk "B". Together Port 0 and 2 are RAID-1 Array 0. Port 3 is vacant. Port 4 has Disk "C" -- Port 5 has Disk "D". Together these are RAID-1 Array 1. Array 0 (C: Drive) contains Windows 2003 Server (64-bit) OS and MS Exchange, etc. Array 1 is a "data disk" and the Exchange Information Stores are on Array 1 (D: Drive).

The arrays started out on 4 identical 500GB HDDs. Over the years, each of these HDDs was, individually, replaced when they failed, by removing the old drive, inserting the new drive into a vacant port, and adding it as a Hot Spare, at which point of course the Rebuild would begin. As we know, the replacement disk had to be as big or bigger than the failed drive. Over time, with replacements, the original drive partitions have remained the same but the disks are now A=750GB and B,C,D=1TB drives. So, I have a partition that is smaller than the physical drive it rests on.

Does anyone know how I can examine Disks A and C to find out the correct parameters to specify when I try to recreate the logical disks ? I think I need the EXACT Size in MB and the Stripe size to use. As I understand it, if I can get these right, save the Configuration, then reboot, the controller should recognize correctly the disks/arrays and let me boot as per normal processes.

The drives themselves are, as far as I know, undamaged. The server board somehow erased its knowledge of the arrays during a reboot when I was trying to add a 5th HDD to the system.

Mainly I need to attempt to put the array back in touch with the motherboard's knowledge of the LDs.

Also, would appreciate any recommendations on what software to use to clone Disks A,B,C,D onto E,F,G,H and experiment with cloned versions not the original disks.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Component Unfit for every Server blade on mfsys25

Hello,

all of the sudden the Modular Server Control shows for both blades that are installed "Component unfit". I have reinserted both blades allready and restarted the whole CMM. I even installed the latest Firmware (6.10) to resolv that problem, but I did not change anything either. The blades are still working properly, but due to that massage I do not get any further option in Modular Server Control, e.g. remote KVM, shutting down etc. What else can I do to fix that issue?

Install Intel Active System Console

I'm trying to install Intel Active System Console on RHEL 6.4. Followed everything in the user guide. Everything installed fine but I cannot get theIn lighttpd to work properly. /etc/init.d/lighttpd status always returns "lighttpd dead but subsys locked". I'm really appreciated if anyone can help me out with this problem.

Identify issue with amber blinking light on the front panel (S5520SC)

In the technical product specification  of the board I can see that the problem can be connected with on of the following issues:

– Critical temperature threshold asserted

– CATERR asserted

– Critical voltage threshold asserted

– VRD hot asserted

– SMI Timeout asserted

First thing that caught my attention were metrics from vsphere client which shows that one of the fan was spinning at half of speed (1500rpm) compared to the others. Is there any location to check any threshold value and if this can be a problem?

Second issue that can be connected with the blinking led could be probably temperature of the  cpu. In the attached picture from vsphere temperatures are marked as normal but values seems to be messed up..

Third thing that I came around in the /var/log/messages was a warning that one of the disk is above the temparature treshold. After checking smart parameters I could see that all metrics were ok except one - Driver Rated Max Temperature. Could this metric trigger the blinking led?

Cannot Install VMWare ESXi S2600CP2 in ESRT-2 RAID

Dear All, I have 10 server using Intel ServerBoard S2600CP2 Board, I've been confused dealing with VMWare ESXi 5.x Installation. Its been 2 weeks since I decided to build Server using S2600CP2 and 2 x E5-2620, but I found a dead end with ESXi Installation. Unfortunately, I've bought 10 RKSAS8R5 for upgrading my SAS Capability, and it didn't work with ESXi. I try to use both ESRT-2 and RSTe, but no driver could detect the RAID Controller. My question:

1. Is there any fit driver for ESXi 5.x?

2. How could I maximize using Virtual Machine, especially with VMWare ESXi 5.x? Or, does anything VM Program outside VMWare?

3. I try to unplug the RKSAS8R5 from the SATA/SAS, and then, my all system is still detected the SAS HDD. Is the RKSAS8R5 one time plug for all system, or just one system?

Thank you for your attention and answer.

S5500BC - Possible to just use CPU2 slot?

I've found that CPU1 slot has a few bent pins.  I've read in the manual that CPU1 slot needs to be populated for CPU2 slot to work.

Is there any way around this?    Thanks

raid still reporting predictive failure after drive replacement

I have a machine running centOS 5.3.  It has a 6-disk raid 5 array. According to the raid web console 2, The raid card appears to be SRCSASBB81.

About a week ago, I started to receive these predictive failure warnings (once per day).

Controller ID: 0  PD Predictive failure: --:--:4

Generated on:Mon Sep 16 08:29:57 2013

SYSTEM DETAILS---

IP Address: REDACTED

OS Name: Linux

OS Version: 2.6

Driver Name: megaraid_sas

Driver Version: 00.00.04.01-RH1

IMAGE DETAILS---

BIOS Version: 1.12.122-0393

Firmware Package Version: 8.0.1-0029

Firmware Version: NT16

So, I started the intel raid web console, looked at all the drives and saw that drive 4 did have a "pred fail count" of 1.  All the other disks had 0 in that field.  I figured that's what the "--:--:4" in the warning was referring to.  I backed up everything on the raid, identified the physical location of all drives then using the raid web console took drive 4 off line (putting the raid into a degraded state).  The light on the physical drive in the expected location turned orange - as expected.  I removed the disk and replaced it with a new one.  The raid rebuilt and came back to optimal with the new disk.  All went as planned. Yay!

However, every morning at 7:30 AM, I still get this same predictive failure warning.  The "pred fail count" on the new disk (like all the others) is now 0.  Everything looks fine.  Is there some file where I have to manually reset some failure count?  I can't see anything in the UI that indicates there is something else I need to do.

Please help me understand what's going on and what further steps I should take

Thanks.

W2600CR2 Shuts Down

I need assistance with a new P4000IP/W2600CR workstation system being set up. It is fitted with 128 Mb memory, an SSD, 4 hard drives, a DVD drive and RSTe dongle. It has 2@ E5-2687W CPUs.

The problem is:

1. The system shuts down during BIOS setup.

2. With a quick reboot, it sometimes shuts down without completing POST or reaching BIOS.

3. During POST, there is a beep sequence: beep..... beep-beep (long space).... beep-beep-beep (short space); however, the system goes to boot and can get into BIOS with no problem. Some of these appear to be related to codes for proper start of the Intel RAID.

It appears to be a thermal problem, but I cannot seem to make it any better.

1. Thermal grease has been checked and replaced on both CPUs.

2. Fans are working, and the air duct is in place with a closed panel.

3. All CPU and memory reports in BIOS check out.

4. RAID has not been configured, and no OS has been installed.

5. Hard drives are spaced, and there are gaps in the drive rack.

6. All storage is seen by the BIOS properly.

Other than the shutdown problem, everything seems normal. I really need some assistance debugging this one.

Thanks in advance.

E-mail notifications in RAID Web Console 2

Hello, few months ago I bought the Intel SRCSATAWB RAID controller which has been working fine so far (except one of the breakout cables which was damaged upon arrival). I have set up everything to my liking except one thing:

I seem to be unable to properly set up e-mail notifications.

The thing is, whatever I type into the configuration window, when I try to send myself a test e-mail, I get an error message stating:

The test email could not be sent.

Check the mail server settings and try again.

I searched a bit on the Internet, but I found only these topics and none of these helped me:

Also, I did a bit of testing. I have two SMTP server at my disposal, none of them use any kind of encryption and both listen on a standard port 25:

- The first one does not use any authentication (my computer is authentified by being in the same network)

- The second one does use a standard method of authentication (username and password)

No matter how I configure these, I am just unable to send a test e-mail.

By looking at the Wireshark logs, I noticed the following: RAID Web Console 2 seems to be improperly communicating with the SMTP server and thus I won't get authenticated with the second SMTP server which then, of course, denies any communication (relaying not allowed). Please see the attached image for more information.

Am I doing something wrong or is there actually a bug in the Web Console? I am willing to do various tests and logs if necessary.

I am using the newest Web Console 2 available:

Version 9.00.0000

Client Build: 2.90-00

Hello

There is an intel® Server Chassis SC5600BRP with Intel® Server Board S5500HCV which supports RAID 1. We have done a RAID 1 with two H.D.D each having a capacity of 500GB and has been working for a while. We are planning to add 2 More H.D.D with capacity of one TB, in order to expand our storage capacity. With the knowledge that information stored on the two available HDDs are important and it is not acceptable to lose any data (and operating system), how could I do the fore mentioned upgrade.

Thank you.

SR2400 with SE7520JR2 mobo, SCSI to SATA conversion?

As the title suggests, I have a SR2400 server chassis with a SE7520JR2 motherboard. This has the original scsi configuration that comes with the server. I've noticed kits to swap out the backplane and make it SATA ready. We repurpose old servers at NAS boxes to save money and was wondering if this is possible with what I have? I'm thinking i'd need a 3rd party RAID card to get all 6 drives working to replace the Adaptec SCSI riser card to get this working. Any insights would be appreciated!

Edit: Doing further research, we might have to also buy the RAID card on ebay, just read a Tested Hardware and Operating Systems List document from Intel for the SE7520JR2 and all the cards listed are fairly old. Cheap buys on ebay, though so it'll save that much more money.
